Govt. Urges Industry to Develop Localized Transmission Supply Chains to Support Renewable Energy- Sterlite Power Big Beneficiary in Unlisted Space

In a significant move to accelerate the development of India's electricity transmission infrastructure, the government has invited industry stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for localizing transmission supply chains. The Power Secretary, Pankaj Agarwal, emphasized the growing challenges associated with expanding the country's grid infrastructure, particularly in light of the rapid growth in renewable energy sources like solar power. As India moves toward its ambitious energy goals, the need for a robust transmission network has become increasingly urgent.

A New Policy Push for the Transmission Sector

During a recent meeting, Agarwal urged industry leaders to explore whether a Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, or an alternative policy intervention, could be implemented to encourage domestic manufacturing and reduce the sector's dependence on imports. This initiative aims to boost self-reliance in building critical transmission infrastructure, essential for evacuating power from new energy projects.

Given the swift deployment of solar parks, which can be installed much faster than traditional coal or nuclear plants, the urgency to develop transmission lines has never been greater. Solar projects, particularly in regions like Rajasthan and Gujarat, can be set up within months. However, the current transmission infrastructure is struggling to keep up with this pace, leading to concerns about energy evacuation and grid stability.

The Capacity Challenge: Meeting Future Demand

India’s peak power demand is projected to grow at a rate of 7% annually over the next five years, with total demand likely to reach 446 GW by 2030. This growth highlights the pressing need for an efficient and scalable transmission network capable of handling both conventional and renewable energy inputs. To meet this rising demand, the government is planning to expand the existing transmission network from 4.85 lakh circuit kilometers (ckm) to 6.48 lakh ckm by 2032.

This expansion will play a critical role in integrating an additional 600 GW of non-fossil fuel energy into the grid, including substantial contributions from solar and wind power. Industry experts have highlighted that the lack of adequate transmission lines could create a bottleneck, potentially slowing down India’s transition to a renewable energy-driven economy.

Growing Demand for Localized Solutions

One of the key areas of concern is the reliance on imported components for building transmission infrastructure. As India seeks to scale up its renewable energy capacity, the Power Secretary has encouraged stakeholders to focus on developing domestic supply chains. This would not only reduce costs but also ensure that the country is not vulnerable to global supply chain disruptions.

The government's proposal for a PLI-like scheme specifically aimed at the transmission sector could be a game-changer. By offering incentives to local manufacturers of critical components like transformers, cables, and circuit breakers, the government aims to foster innovation and boost local production. Such incentives would likely accelerate the development of new transmission lines, ensuring that they are in place before the upcoming surge in energy demand from renewable sources.

Sterlite Power Unlisted Share: A Major Beneficiary

Among the companies poised to benefit significantly from these developments is Sterlite Power, a leading player in the transmission infrastructure sector. Sterlite Power has already made a name for itself with its extensive expertise in designing, financing, and executing large-scale transmission projects both in India and internationally. Here's why Sterlite Power stands to gain from the government's push for localized transmission supply chains:

Experience in Fast-tracked Projects: Sterlite Power has a proven track record of executing projects under tight timelines, making them well-suited for the government’s vision of rapidly scaling up transmission lines to match the pace of solar park deployment. Their project management capabilities align with the need to establish transmission infrastructure swiftly to support renewable energy expansion.

In-house Technology and Manufacturing: Sterlite Power manufactures key components like conductors and cables, making them a natural fit for the government's call for localized supply chains. With the potential introduction of a PLI-like scheme, Sterlite could further enhance its manufacturing capabilities, reducing dependency on imports and aligning with the government's “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.

Strategic Position in Renewable Integration: The company is already working on several high-capacity transmission corridors that are critical for evacuating power from renewable energy hubs, particularly solar parks in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. With the government's focus on expanding the transmission network to absorb an additional 600 GW of renewable energy by 2032, Sterlite Power is positioned as a key player in this transformation.

Investment in Innovation: Sterlite Power’s investment in technological innovation, including high-performance conductors and smart grids, aligns with the government’s goals of improving grid efficiency. These innovations will help ensure that the power generated from renewable sources can be evacuated quickly and efficiently, minimizing energy losses and improving the overall reliability of the grid.

Involvement in International Projects: Sterlite Power's experience in executing international transmission projects also gives it an edge as the company can bring best practices from global markets to India. This expertise will be invaluable as India ramps up its efforts to build a world-class transmission network capable of handling increasing renewable energy inputs.

Opportunities for Industry Players

The localization of transmission supply chains presents significant opportunities for industry players, especially those involved in manufacturing, infrastructure development, and technology innovation. Companies that specialize in the production of transmission components and grid infrastructure stand to benefit from the government's focus on reducing import dependency.

Furthermore, the growing demand for renewable energy, particularly solar, will drive the need for more flexible and resilient transmission networks. As solar parks are typically located far from urban centers, where demand is highest, the ability to transfer power efficiently across long distances will be crucial. Companies that can offer advanced transmission technologies or solutions for grid management will have a unique opportunity to play a leading role in India’s energy transition.

Looking Ahead: The Government's Vision for 2030

As part of its broader energy vision, the Indian government is committed to scaling up its renewable energy capacity and reducing its dependence on fossil fuels. By 2030, it aims to generate at least 50% of its total electricity from non-fossil fuel sources. Solar energy, in particular, is expected to play a central role in achieving this target.

However, the successful integration of renewable energy into the grid hinges on the development of a robust and efficient transmission network. The government’s proactive approach in engaging with industry leaders and incentivizing domestic manufacturing signals its commitment to addressing this challenge.

By focusing on localized supply chains, expanding the transmission network, and fostering innovation, India is positioning itself to lead the global transition to clean energy. The coming years will be crucial, and the steps taken today to bolster the country’s transmission infrastructure will determine its ability to meet its future energy needs.

Conclusion

The call for localized transmission supply chains marks a pivotal moment in India's energy journey. As solar and other renewable energy sources continue to expand rapidly, the transmission infrastructure must keep pace to ensure that power generated in remote areas can reach the urban and industrial centers where it is most needed. With the government's support through potential incentives like the PLI scheme and increased focus on domestic production, the industry is poised to see significant growth and development in the coming years. Sterlite Power, with its in-house manufacturing, innovative solutions, and experience in large-scale projects, is well-positioned to be a major beneficiary of this sectoral push. Greenzo to Supply Electrolyzers to RBM Infracon: Boosting India's Green Hydrogen Economy

Electrolyzer manufacturer Greenzo Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with RBM Infracon to supply electrolyzers with a total capacity of 15 MW. These electrolyzers will be deployed across Jamnagar, Kutch, and Bhuj in Gujarat, involving an investment of ₹200 crore.

Greenzo Energy is currently India's sole indigenous alkaline electrolyzer manufacturer, while RBM Infracon is a company involved in engineering, procurement, and construction services. This partnership aims to contribute to India’s green hydrogen goals by producing green hydrogen from these facilities, which will be supplied to small-scale enterprises engaged in sectors like steel manufacturing, refineries, and petrochemicals.

"We are discussing with small and medium-scale enterprises in Gujarat to supply green hydrogen. However, no concrete offtake agreement has been signed so far," said Jay Bajrang Mani, Managing Director of RBM Infracon. He emphasized the strategic placement of these facilities near refineries to ensure efficient supply of green hydrogen.

Sandeep Agarwal, Managing Director of Greenzo Energy, added that the company's electrolyzers are fully indigenously manufactured and customized for India’s climatic conditions. Greenzo's alkaline electrolyzers are designed to deliver hydrogen at 30 bar pressure, eliminating the need for additional compressors.

Expanding Greenzo’s Unlisted Share Market Reach

With this order, Greenzo Energy’s order book now stands at ₹1,400 crore, with ₹1,000 crore expected to be realized in the financial year 2025-26. This growth in orders reflects India's expanding renewable energy landscape and Greenzo’s leadership role in the green hydrogen market.

Apart from its agreement with RBM Infracon, Greenzo Energy has secured contracts with Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) for a super-critical thermal power plant. The company has also received orders from the Government of Oman and a prominent public sector company in Nepal.

Understanding Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, to split water into hydrogen and oxygen through a process called electrolysis. It is considered a key component in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as it provides a cleaner alternative to conventional hydrogen, which is often derived from fossil fuels.

The potential applications of green hydrogen are vast, ranging from fuel cells in electric vehicles to power generation, and as a feedstock for various industries. Its production is carbon-free, making it an attractive solution for countries committed to reducing their carbon footprints.

Green Hydrogen in India: A Nascent Sector

The green hydrogen industry in India is still in its nascent stage, largely because of the high costs associated with production and the lack of infrastructure for distribution and utilization. As of now, the green hydrogen sector in India is primarily focused on creating initial pilot projects and establishing electrolyzer manufacturing facilities.

India's green hydrogen initiatives are gradually gaining traction, with government policies like the National Hydrogen Mission aiming to encourage both public and private sectors to invest in this emerging industry. The goal is to make India a hub for green hydrogen production by leveraging the country's renewable energy capacity.

Industrial Applications First: The Path to Adoption

Currently, the primary consumers of green hydrogen in India are expected to be heavy industries, such as:

Steel Manufacturing: Green hydrogen can serve as an alternative to coal in the steelmaking process, making it an attractive option for industries looking to decarbonize.

Petrochemical Refineries: Refineries can use green hydrogen to process crude oil, further reducing the carbon footprint of their operations.

Fertilizer Production: Green hydrogen can replace conventional hydrogen in the production of ammonia, which is a critical input for fertilizers.

These sectors have high energy demands and significant emissions, making them ideal candidates for adopting green hydrogen to transition towards a sustainable and low-carbon energy source.

Challenges to Overcome

While the potential for green hydrogen in India is immense, several challenges need to be addressed:

High Cost of Electrolyzers: The production cost of green hydrogen is significantly influenced by the price of electrolyzers, which are still relatively expensive due to limited manufacturing.

Infrastructure and Distribution: The infrastructure needed for the large-scale distribution of hydrogen, such as pipelines and refueling stations, is currently inadequate. This makes scalability a concern.

Government Policies and Incentives: Supportive policies, subsidies, and incentives are essential to bridge the cost gap between green hydrogen and other energy sources.

Unlisted Shares of GreenZo Available for Investment

GreenZo's unlisted shares are currently available at INR 675 per share, translating to a market cap of approximately INR 800 crore. Notably, the last private placement round was completed at INR 418 per share in May 2024.

According to GreenZo's valuation report, the company projects revenue of INR 255 crore and a PAT of INR 42 crore for FY 2024-25. If these targets are met, the current P/E ratio would be around 20x. However, we will need to wait for the next 6 months to see if these numbers materialize and validate the projected growth.

Conclusion

The partnership between Greenzo Energy and RBM Infracon is a promising step forward in establishing a viable green hydrogen economy in India. By supplying electrolyzers with a total capacity of 15 MW to facilities across Gujarat, this deal marks an important milestone in India's quest for renewable energy solutions and paves the way for the larger adoption of green hydrogen in heavy industries.

India’s green hydrogen industry is at the beginning of an exciting journey, with a vision to become a major global player in renewable energy. However, to achieve this, there is a need for collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and investors to overcome the existing challenges and make green hydrogen a cost-effective and practical energy solution.

OYO, the Indian travel tech company preparing for an IPO, announced on Saturday its acquisition of the popular American budget hotel chains Motel 6 and Studio 6. The deal, valued at $525 million in an all-cash transaction, will see OYO take ownership from Blackstone Real Estate, the current parent company. This strategic move is aimed at bolstering OYO's already expanding presence in the United States.

Purchase of G6 Hospitality

The acquisition encompasses G6 Hospitality, the parent company of Motel 6 and Studio 6, which has been a major player in the economy lodging sector. Motel 6, known for its strong market positioning and wide-reaching network, is one of the most recognizable budget brands in North America. The transaction is anticipated to close by the fourth quarter of 2024, following the usual regulatory approvals.

Motel 6's Financial Strength and Network

Motel 6's franchise network generates impressive gross room revenues of $1.7 billion, ensuring a solid cash flow base for G6 Hospitality. This significant revenue stream is expected to benefit OYO's long-term growth strategy in the US, allowing the Indian tech company to further penetrate the lucrative economy lodging sector.

OYO's Growth Plans for the Motel 6 and Studio 6 Brands

OYO plans to leverage its technology platform and global distribution network to strengthen the Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands. The company will use its marketing expertise to drive further growth in the US market, ensuring that the brands continue to perform well financially. According to OYO, Motel 6 and Studio 6 will remain separate entities, continuing to operate independently.

OYO's Expanding Footprint in the US Market

Since entering the US in 2019, OYO has seen consistent growth and currently operates over 320 hotels across 35 states. In 2023 alone, the company added nearly 100 hotels to its portfolio, and it aims to expand even further by acquiring an additional 250 properties in 2024. This acquisition marks a pivotal moment for OYO in establishing itself as a formidable player in the US hospitality industry.

Synergies Between OYO and Motel 6

Gautam Swaroop, CEO of OYO International, emphasized that this acquisition is a major milestone for the company. He highlighted the synergy between OYO's entrepreneurial spirit and Motel 6's well-established brand, network, and financial stability in the US. This combination is expected to pave the way for sustainable growth, with both brands continuing to operate independently while benefiting from shared strengths.

Blackstone's Role in Transforming Motel 6

Under Blackstone’s ownership, Motel 6 has undergone significant transformation. Blackstone invested heavily in enhancing the Motel 6 brand, focusing on building an asset-light franchise model. Today, Motel 6 operates nearly 1,500 hotels across the US and Canada, a feat achieved during Blackstone’s tenure. This transaction represents a profitable exit for Blackstone, generating over $1 billion in profits for its investors.

G6 Hospitality Welcomes OYO's Innovative Approach

Julie Arrowsmith, CEO of G6 Hospitality, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, noting that OYO's innovative business model would enable the Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands to further elevate their offerings. While the iconic Motel 6 brand remains rooted in its legacy of providing affordable lodging for travelers, the partnership with OYO is expected to open up new avenues for growth and customer experience enhancement.

Financial Advisors and Legal Support for the Deal

This high-profile deal was facilitated by leading financial and legal advisors. Goldman Sachs acted as Blackstone’s lead advisor, with additional support from Jones Lang LaSalle Securities and PJT Partners. Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP served as legal counsel for Blackstone, ensuring the transaction followed all necessary protocols and maximized value for the private equity firm.

OYO's acquisition of Motel 6 and Studio 6 represents a significant step in its journey toward expanding its footprint in the global hospitality market, particularly in North America. This move will allow OYO to tap into the vast potential of the budget hotel segment in the US while enhancing the Motel 6 brand's legacy through technology-driven innovation.

Despite an 18% volume growth, the fall in product prices limited revenue expansion. The international business experienced a robust 38% volume growth, with Brazil, Indofil’s largest market, showing an impressive 65% growth. The company also introduced three new products in the European market, which are expected to contribute to revenue growth in the coming years.

2. Gross margins improved from 37% in FY23 to 42% in FY24,driven by a softening in raw material prices, enhancing profitability.

3. Profit After Tax (PAT)rose significantly by 45%, increasing from INR 241 Cr in FY23 to INR 332 Cr in FY24, mainly due to the reduction in raw material costs.

4.In FY24, Indofil generated an operational cash flow of INR 426 Cr, a substantial turnaround from the negative INR 67 Cr in FY23. The company undertook a total capex of INR 67 Cr and made non-current asset purchases amounting to INR 25 Cr. With the surplus cash from operations, Indofil repaid INR 200 Cr of debt, paid INR 39 Cr in interest, and distributed INR 27 Cr in dividends. By the end of the fiscal year, the company had generated INR 217 Cr in cash from its business operations.

5. The Return on Equity (ROE) for FY24 stood at 8.5%, with Earnings Per Share (EPS) of INR 155.

F) Valuation of Indofil Unlisted Shares

Currently, in the unlisted market, Indofil is available at INR 1,375 per share, with a market capitalization of INR 3,100 Cr and a P/E ratio of 10x.

In comparison, Rallis India, a listed company and part of the Tata Group with a legacy spanning over 150 years, is trading at a P/E of 47x. Rallis India operates across the agrochemical value chain, offering products ranging from seeds to organic plant growth nutrients.

Bharat Rasayan Ltd, another player in the agrochemical sector, is trading at a P/E of 37x. The company specialises in the manufacturing of Technical Grade Pesticides and Intermediates used in the agrochemical industry.

Looking at the top listed 10 players in the agrochemical industry, the median P/E ratio is above 40, highlighting Indofil Is comparatively low valuation in the unlisted market

Indofil's current valuation in the unlisted market is being affected by two primary factors:

1. Ongoing Legal Disputes:The unresolved legal battle between Bina Modi (Chairperson and Managing Director) and her sons, Lalit and Samir Modi, over the division of family assets, including Indofil, Godfrey Phillips, and Modi Mills, has created instability. Investors are wary of this internal conflict, as it impacts the governance and strategic direction of the companies involved. The lack of clarity around control and ownership further dampens investor confidence.

2. No IPO Expectations: A major exit route for investors in the unlisted market is through an IPO, but with no foreseeable IPO plans for Indofil, investors are hesitant. The absence of an upcoming IPO limits liquidity and makes it difficult for investors to exit, which further suppresses demand and, consequently, the company's valuation. These two factors together contribute to why Indofil is not achieving the higher valuations seen by its peers in the agrochemical industry.
