Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) is gearing up for a major overhaul of its international terminal with an investment of Rs 700 crore. The ambitious project is scheduled to break ground in December, significantly enhancing the airport’s capacity and services.
Expansion to Increase Aircraft Capacity
Upon completion, the upgraded terminal will have the capacity to accommodate 44 aircraft, an improvement from its current limit of 36. This expansion is part of CIAL’s broader strategy to modernize and elevate the airport's infrastructure, catering to growing passenger traffic.
Retail and Lounge Upgrades to Enhance Passenger Experience
The new terminal will offer passengers a superior experience, featuring a wide range of retail stores and opulent lounge areas. These upgrades aim to provide travelers with high-end services and amenities, reflecting CIAL’s commitment to customer satisfaction.
New Apron and Terminal Expansion
A critical component of the project is the construction of a new apron spanning 1.5 million square feet, located on the northern side of the airport. The terminal itself will also see a sizable expansion, adding 500,000 square feet to its existing space. According to an official, the apron construction is nearing its final stages.
Recent Developments and Future Plans
In addition to the terminal expansion, CIAL has been actively pursuing other major projects. Last year, the airport outlined seven key development initiatives, including the construction of a luxury aero lounge with accommodations, which was opened last month. Furthermore, the airport introduced the Digi Yatra initiative in October 2023, streamlining security procedures for travelers through digital technology.
