Travel booking platform OYO has announced a new check-in policy for its partner hotels, starting with the city of Meerut. According to the revised guidelines, unmarried couples will no longer be permitted to check in at participating hotels. This change, which applies to all reservations, including online bookings, requires couples to present valid proof of their relationship at the time of check-in. Partner hotels have been granted the discretion to deny bookings to couples based on their judgment and local societal norms, the company stated.
1. Implementation in Meerut and Beyond
OYO has directed its partner hotels in Meerut to implement the updated policy immediately. The company will assess the feedback from this initial rollout to determine if the policy should be expanded to other cities. Insiders have indicated that the policy has been introduced following persistent requests from local residents and civil society groups in Meerut, as well as from individuals in other cities who have advocated for such measures.
2. Responding to Local Concerns
Pawas Sharma, OYO’s Region Head for North India, emphasized the company’s commitment to balancing individual freedoms with community sensibilities. “OYO is dedicated to maintaining safe and responsible hospitality standards. While we value personal liberties, we also recognize our duty to engage with law enforcement and civil society groups within the markets we serve. This policy will be reviewed periodically to assess its effectiveness and impact,” he said in a statement.
3. Aiming for a Family-Friendly Experience
The updated policy is part of OYO’s broader initiative to reshape its image and cater to a wider audience. The company aims to position itself as a brand offering a safe and welcoming environment for families, students, solo travelers, business professionals, and religious tourists. OYO views this step as a way to align with local expectations while providing a secure and comfortable experience for its guests.
