Financial Performance – Q3 & 9 Months Update
HPX has reported its latest financial numbers through PTC India's earnings call, as PTC holds a 22.5% equity stake in HPX.
For the current quarter, HPX posted a total income of ₹8.64 crores, slightly higher than ₹8.22 crores in the same quarter last year. However, the company reported a loss of ₹2.46 crores this quarter, compared to a profit of ₹1.28 crores in the corresponding quarter last year.
For the 9-month period, total income stood at ₹36.4 crores versus ₹30.27 crores in the same period last year — a healthy revenue growth. The PAT for 9 months came in at ₹4.42 crores, compared to ₹8.38 crores in the corresponding period, reflecting pressure on profitability.
Why the Loss This Quarter?
Management clearly explained that the quarterly loss was primarily driven by increased spending on technology infrastructure and manpower. This is an investment phase for HPX as it builds its platform capabilities — not a sign of business deterioration.
The Big Trigger — Market Coupling
The most important update for HPX shareholders is the market coupling development.
The APTEL (Appellate Tribunal for Electricity) has passed a judgment directing that market coupling must be implemented across power exchanges. This is a game-changer for HPX because currently most power trading volume is concentrated on the dominant exchange. Market coupling, once implemented, would distribute volumes more equitably across all three power exchanges — which directly benefits HPX.
However, implementation is dependent on CERC (Central Electricity Regulatory Commission) first coming out with a formal regulation. Management has confirmed that technological preparations at HPX are already underway and they are not lagging behind on IT investments.
Timeline is uncertain — as PTC management put it, predicting how fast CERC will issue the regulation is not in their control. But the direction is clearly positive.
What Does This Mean for HPX Shareholders?
Revenue is growing year-on-year (₹30.27 Cr → ₹36.4 Cr in 9 months)
Short-term losses are due to technology and manpower investment — a growth phase expense
Market coupling is the key catalyst — once implemented, it could significantly increase HPX's trading volumes and revenue
PTC, as the largest shareholder at 22.5%, has indicated they are watching the market coupling outcome before making any decisions on stake sale or bringing in new partners
The overall outlook from management was described as positive, with market coupling expected to add "immense value" to HPX
Bottom Line
HPX is in an investment phase, spending on technology ahead of the anticipated market coupling rollout. The fundamentals are intact with growing revenue. Market coupling remains the single biggest catalyst for a re-rating of HPX as an unlisted asset. Shareholders should watch for CERC regulation as the next major trigger.
