Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has implemented a self-baggage drop service at its Domestic Terminal (T1), aimed at enhancing the passenger experience and service quality. This new feature allows travelers to independently place their check-in luggage on conveyor belts without the need for airline staff assistance. Given that many airlines now support this technology within their check-in processes, approximately 95 percent of domestic travelers, primarily flying with carriers such as Air Asia, Indigo, and Air India, can now utilize this service at Cochin Airport.
Passengers can obtain their boarding passes and baggage tags from one of the 10 Common Use Self Service (CUSS) kiosks located at the terminal gates. Once the baggage tag is affixed, travelers can proceed to one of the four self-bag drop stations, situated at check-in counters 27 to 30, to deposit their luggage. These systems are fully integrated with CIAL’s Baggage Handling System and are imported from Canada, similar to those used at Incheon Airport in South Korea.
S Suhas IAS, Managing Director of CIAL, emphasized the airport's dedication to delivering a superior travel experience and improving operational efficiency.
In addition to the self-baggage drop, CIAL has also launched the Digi Yatra initiative, facilitating paperless travel through biometric authentication. This technology verifies passenger identities at entry points, security checks, and boarding gates. Furthermore, CIAL is working on integrating Digi Yatra’s facial recognition technology with the self-baggage drop system, aiming to eliminate the need for physical boarding passes in the near future.
