Air India’s decision to halt its Kochi-London Gatwick direct flight from March 28 has sparked discussions about the future of this critical international route. The flight, which currently operates on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, is the only direct connection between Kerala and Europe, making it an essential link for passengers traveling between the two regions.  

 1.Strategic Talks Between CIAL and Air India  
In a bid to resolve the issue, the Managing Director of Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL), S Suhas, IAS, met with Air India officials at their headquarters in Gurgaon. The meeting, held on instructions from the Kerala government, included Air India Group Head P Balaji and CIAL Airport Director Manu G. During the discussions, CIAL highlighted the route’s strategic importance for Kerala and presented a proposal to ensure the service becomes profitable.  

2. Proposed Incentive Package  
CIAL put forward a structured incentive scheme aimed at supporting Air India’s operations on the Kochi-London route until the service gains commercial stability. This package, designed to make the route financially viable, reflects CIAL’s commitment to maintaining robust international connectivity from Kochi.  

3. Air India’s Response  
In response to CIAL’s proposal, Air India assured that it would reconsider the decision to suspend the service after evaluating the proposed incentives. The airline indicated that a final decision would be made in the coming months, following the summer schedule. This period will allow Air India to assess the feasibility of resuming operations based on passenger demand and other commercial factors.  

 4. Future Prospects for Kochi Connectivity  
Both Air India and CIAL expressed their shared commitment to finding a sustainable solution that aligns with traveler needs and enhances Kochi’s global connectivity. Additionally, Air India is exploring the possibility of expanding its overall network from Kochi, subject to aircraft availability. Further discussions between the two parties will determine the future of the Kochi-London service and other potential routes.
